The Mary Roxburghe Trust has announced that Grade I listed West Horsley Place is now available as a venue for weddings and private events in exclusive partnership with premium food experience brand and event caterer rhubarb.

This is the first time that this beautiful and historically important house and gardens have been available for private hire.

Rhubarb will work with clients to create bespoke wedding receptions and celebrations. With creative dishes such as seared scallops with cauliflower and truffle, or crispy duck egg with parmesan panna cotta, English peas, cep crumble and Wiltshire truffle to start; main courses including guinea fowl breast with herb gnocchi, wild mushrooms, broad beans and watercress velouté, or roasted hake with rissole potatoes, ventrèche and peas; and a decadent choice of puddings from apple parfait with a salted caramel centre, caramel popcorn crumb and apple sorbet, to a glazed lemon tart with passionfruit green tea meringue; rhubarb has delicious choices to cater for everyone.

Since the 15th century the house has been a very elegant private residence, welcoming a number of illustrious owners and royal visitors including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

Three years ago West Horsley Place came into the public eye when historian and former presenter of University Challenge, Bamber Gascoigne, unexpectedly inherited the estate from his aunt, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe and collaborated with the Trust of the Grange Park Opera to create a smaller version of La Scala - the famous opera house in Milan - in the woods behind the house. This summer West Horsley Place celebrated the first Grange Park Opera festival in the Theatre in the Woods.

To enable others to enjoy this atmospheric country house and gardens, Bamber and Christina Gascoigne generously transferred ownership of West Horsley Place to a newly-formed charity, The Mary Roxburghe Trust. Income from the weddings, private events and filming will help MRT with their charitable mission to restore and care for West Horsley Place.

Ideally located for those seeking a venue within easy reach from London, West Horsley Place is less than an hour’s drive from central London and is a 20 minute walk from Horsley Station (45 mins from Waterloo).

The house is known for its beautiful 17th century brick façade and a wonderful selection of rooms, including the spacious and elegant Stone Hall with original fireplace, large sumptuous first floor drawing room, a cosy and intimate book-lined library and a sunny morning room, and by next summer weddings and civil partnerships will be conducted within the house.

In addition, the romantic walled gardens offer the perfect backdrop for wedding photographs and feature various areas where a marquee could be located. Next year further event spaces will be available in the adjacent Place Farm and Tudor Barn.

West Horsley Place has recently gained fame as the backdrop of the blockbuster movie, My Cousin Rachel, starring Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin and other yet-to-be revealed dramas are due to be filmed later this year.

Whether you are seeking an intimate location for a country wedding or a unique, historic house for private dinners, special occasions or large-scale celebrations, West Horsley Place with creative, bespoke catering and party planning provided by rhubarb, is a magical venue at any time of year.
